Jejemons and Jejemon Language Defended by a Catholic Bishop, pEoW~

While the Department of Education has already declared an all-out war against the “jejemons” especially with the opening of classes only weeks from now; these lovers of incomprehensible and funny language found an unlikely ally from a Catholic bishop.

Legazpi Bishop Joel Baylon, Chair of the Episcopal Commission on Youth of CBCP said that values are more important than language like the values of decency, chastity and honesty.

Bishop Baylon expressed his thoughts about the “jejemon” invasion on Radio Veritas saying,

“Language is merely an expression of experience and what is more important are the values behind the language and the principle that shapes the person’s character.  I am more worried of how the youth reacted to the recent political exercise which was (allegedly) characterized by vote-buying.”

So how will the teachers face the tsunami of “jejemon” language inside the classroom”?  This is what our “jejemon” bishop said,

“They should keep, maintain and if possible improve the standards as the youngsters today are not setting standards and they are not telling us how to speak and write.”

He said that being a “jejemon” is just one of the many ways our youth are expressing themselves.

Will this not only open the windows of the Church but also the doors for a Vatican Council III to usher in all the “jejemons”?

Personally, I don’t like…wait, I am pissed off with all “jejemon language” especially when I am checking reflection papers of students and reading text messages and reading paperworks to grade.  It is like me trying to read the love letter of Queen Nafertiti with the hieroglyphics and all.

How about you guys?  What is your thought about the “jejemons” and the “jejemon language”?

The good bishop deeply cares about raising standards and all that. And he thinks it will help us achieve that by embracing this jejemon fad? Good grief. That’s ridiculous, if you ask me. Good luck on that backward thinking.

I refuse to call it a jejemon phenomenon. The word should be clearly reserved for something truly outstanding and unique.

Lots of ways to be unique in this world. Succumbing to jejemon-speak just because it’s a fad is a massive failure of the imagination. But there’s an upside to this. It clears the air of any lingering mystery – for once this removes all doubt that its adherents are unmitigated freaks. Or pricks. Whichever applies.

Password cRacK3rZ hate Jejemons because they are using strong passwords by combining lowercase, uppercase, symbols and all that.

Couldn’t believe that they really pay attention to this jejemon thing. What would happen to english education if they have to support this. (sigh)

I think it all depends on who is describing the invasion of “jejemon”. If it comes from our POVs, then this is a disaster while when you are to ask the die-hard “jejemons” this is what personal redemption from the pit of oblivion as they rise to form a new culture means.

Again, if they are to argue with you maybe, being a jejemon takes a lot of crazy imagination, LOL!

Hay…I am pretty sure this “jejemon” thing is the last to conquer our poor world.

Hay naku, don’t understand their language talaga Darbs…sakit sa ulo.

With this jejemon language nawala na yung established or maybe accepted rule sa text language na kapag naka-caps ay galit or something na heavy ang message…eh ngayun iba sila magtext, di mo alam if sinisigawan ka or what, plus you can’t totally understand their message.

I agree. One word ang description so annoying. However, itong mahilig tayong makikisakay, kinain at nilunok ko na lang kung makatanggap ng text mula sa Pinas. Kahit man sa sakit ng loob, sakit sa ulo, sapilitang i-decipher ang mensahi . But again, your experience is different because you are a writer and most of all an educator.

Yeah, the indiscriminate use and abuse of exclamation point alone drives one crazy, doesn’t it. I wonder how a pick up line looks like in jejemon. Do they get lucky using it? If they can do that without at least getting bitch slapped then I have to say my faith in mankind needs some serious buttressing, I’m afraid.l

Even though I dislike Jejenese with so much passion, I’m inclined to agree with the bishop. It’s self expression. I speak Baklesh outside the classroom and switch to straight English inside the classroom. When it comes to formal use of the language (for business purposes or within the classroom), however, there has to be standards. When we ask students to submit papers, I think we should set parameters and continuously remind them of these. We can opt to be very strict so they’d learn how to do self-correction.

Personally, I think many of those who profess hatred for Jejemons are just jumping the bandwagon. They can’t even tell the difference between 1337 speak (which, like Baklesh, was invented to keep outsiders out) and Jejenese (which is just plain irritating). It amuses me sometimes.

I want to defend the side of jejemons because I am also one of the jejemonians. Being a jejemon does not make me illiterate. Besides, I am a grammarian and an editor of international essays. For me, writing in a jejemon style is just one way of expressing ourselves. Everyone has his or her own foolishness, but I do not actually mean that this way of writing is foolish. What I mean is it gives happiness to jejemonians, including me, without affecting our moral values. We should focus on the content of the language not with the way it was written. Jejemon is just a fad.. Cge kayu guys, pg di kayo marunong sumunod sa uso, tatanda kayo nyan. Then, that will be a more annoying problem (kidding). Ika nga, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so we, jejemons, find it beautiful in our eyes, and no one can question that. Peace to all nalang siguro! :-)

Values and language need not be mutually exclusive. I suppose I won’t mind someone using that weird language (it shouldn’t even have a name—waste of words) after she has proper vocabulary and usage down cold. Anyway, one needs to know the rules before breaking them. Otherwise, that’s just an excuse for not learning proper usage—and a lame one at that.

Thanks for you comment :D

I think there is no problem with self-expression so long as self-expression does not limit the power of communication, more so does not impede the right of other people to know the message being conveyed to them…and more importantly, when this particular kind of self-expression is not brought to the academic realm and discussion.

To this I guess, individuals who are inclined to resort to using language for self-expression should be more conscious of the divide between the formal use of language on many contexts and on where to use this particular language.

Hi Omar, thanks for commenting.

I am not totally against jejemons, so long as they are conscious of the limitations of its use, that it should not be used on other contexts like formal writing.

i am an English teacher and i recognized the “technicality” problem–observing proper or at least decently correct English is a MUST. However, being artistically inclined, jejenese, i must admit is novelty–here free expressions is what’s important. But this is not about free expressions, this is about what’s useful, practical and acceptable to the world–here jejenese is no-no. the deped recognizes the problem when jejenese encroaches into the ground where everyone play at a level field–the young upon approaching this ground MUST use what is PROPER for all. free expressions has its proper ground. to deped and the good bishop: you are thinking at parallel levels. since this is about simple technical issue of acceptable language, you’re out Bishop! though you may be correct. but this is not about who’s correct–it’s about standard expressions. here, it’s obvious who’s out.
