If there is one government official in the Philippines who should be sitting not only as a secretary of Department of Energy and Department of Environment and Natural Resources that should be no less than Mr. Angelo Reyes.  Yes, Sec. Angie.

Despite all his incompetence since he was thrust into the public office as a cabinet secretary, he was always being recycled by her “cute” boss.  He is like an energy that cannot be destructed nor destroyed but only is converted into something new.  He was with the DENR, DILG and now DOE.  He is superman, really; a Jack of all trades yet master of none.

With the energy crisis now strongly being felt by all, the Sec. Reyes initially said everything will be fine and then now calls for her “cute” boss to be granted emergency powers in order to solve the issue, and proposes that the government incur P5.5 billion pesos to buy generation sets.  Each set than can only generate 2MW and will try to fill more than 100 MW of electric shortage in order to supply the power lines of Mindanao.  And that is what you call really an ingenious, hardworking energy secretary.  Obviously, the emergency powers only try to cover up the long years of neglect and improper handling of the agency in line with power security concerns.

Why will the government push for buying those P5.5 billion worth of generation sets?

Well, as they say, in every disaster, real capitalists find gold mines.  No, capitalist will make easy money with this scheme though at the end of the day some of them may also benefit from this proposal.  P5.5 billion is such a big amount and if awarding of contracts and purchasing of equipment for government use has been proven by many to be always overpriced and padded with kickbacks by those who lobby for it, certainly, one can easily assume that this project and power crisis can easily become a milking cow for those who lobby for such proposal.  Adding insult to injury.

I think that Angie Reyes and the government, more so the “cute” occupant of the Palace should have seen this problem already and had not waited for the crisis to be already in our midst crippling our daily activities and right to live an undisturbed life.  For almost nine years of staying in power, she did nothing, same with the issue of petroleum and food security.  And now that the crisis is already here, they are crying out loud to have emergency powers handed over to them on a silver platter.

So now, it is not only cheating that pays the cheater cartloads of cash and long years of staying in power; incompetence may also fatten your check book and may install your picture frame on many halls of government offices.

It is not only making business here that I see, but the power crisis most especially in Mindanao could easily become the seedbed of another poll fraud whenever GMA will have the emergency powers on that region.  Now, that is I think a lot scarier than the government spending P5.5 billion pesos with some government officials earning their commission.

With the upcoming elections looming over our horizon, I think one important issue that we need to hear from our presidential aspirants is how they are to address our country’s need for energy security and stability.

I think that Philippines should already go for nuke.  While nuclear energy could generate electricity by using the basic foundation of energy, we just contented ourselves for years with Angie Reyes who can neither be destructed nor destroyed, but could only be transformed and “transferred” to so many positions with the magic wand of his “cute” boss.

What do you think of the power crisis being experienced by the country?  How do you see Sec. Reyes’ of the Deparment of Energy way of handling the crisis?
