He once said that in order to keep yourself afloat in the tight presidential race, one needs to have at least P1 billion on his campaign chest.
And I think he is really living up to his words; a certain quality we all need for our leaders, a far cry from the lousy excuses of always pointing out “lapse of judgment” to all moral failures in governance by GMA. But this certain issue is not of course something plausible.
Manny Villar has been all over town, trying to capture everyone’s fancy up to a voter’s dreaming; riding and employing well a last-song syndrome among the kids through his campaign jingles; bombarding us with all sorts of political ads on primetime on all networks, from OFWs being saved from the torture of foreign employers but will have to live a similar torturous situation here in the country due to poverty, to the Michael V. impersonations that made me lose my interest on him; paying Big G (google) for his online ads; Facebook ads; going around the nation with Willie Revillame giving away house and lot to hapless people waiting for manna; plastic bottles with his face on it; radio ads, print ads; courting Manny Pacquiao; and all sorts of freebies one desperate man can imagine, so long as his paycheck could still withstand the potential reds off his balance sheet.
Manny Villar obviously started campaigning way, way ahead of others, though the Supreme Court has called it “freedom of expression” rendering our capacity to think inutile with just the playing of words against the real personal intentions of political vultures.
To this, I am very much wondering: how much Manny Villar already so far have spent on his political campaign? I have no idea, really, but just looking at all these things he is bombarding us makes my brain go hemorrhagic on doing the mathematical calculation.
Here some screenshots of his online campaigns:
One of his political ads:
These ads, and all the spending are little by little doing some wonder on his numbers, as the latest survey shows that he is up by some points second to Noynoy Aquino, and the latter’s lead diminishing by two points.
Now, my wondering leads me to another one: How will Manny Villar recoup all the money he has spent on his campaign if he wins the presidency, and if he loses?
So, I ask guys. For you, how much Manny Villar may have so far spent on his political campaign? Any figures, estimates? My guess is more than P1 billion.

Yes..It can be 1 billion. I was actually shocked to see Manny Villar’s ad in YouTube! The ad keeps on looping at the side of the video I was watching. I never expected a politician endorsed himself online actually but Manny Villar did it. I think most of the people now are thinking to vote for him because he’s already rich. A wealthy man. But, if does sit in the Presidential Position, I also wonder how he would the money back because, from my point of view, he’s not only a politicial, but also a business man..

I think he has the best campaign out of all the presidentiables right now; or im not just seeing enough of the others. I don’t like his stint with Michael V as well, but my guess is that they originally planned Boy Abunda to interview him since Boy has credibility across all classes. But then decided to drop him since Boy is too close to Krissy and family.
Storytelling is just a great way to get past a person’s defenses and insert some subliminal messages; and they used that in the Michael V series to gradually “inform” people of his platform. The series might have offended people in the AB sector, but I think they’re more concern about the masses’ support.
Why do you think he adapted orange as his color? He hopes to be the darling of the masses, just like ERAP but better than ERAP.

Manny Villar is obviously courting really hard the “masa” which in the process he is antagonizing the the A and B sectors trying to even put a wide divide between the rich and poor.
Color? Hahhaha, Erap was trying to raise his case to the Supreme Court of color wheel Villar’s infringement of his copyright, ehehhehe!

You have to admit that his PR team is a good one. It knows its target audience and it knows how to get its attention and get the message across.
The recent SWS survey confirms this. The Noynoy Aquino camp better wake up to the reality that the Cory Magic alone is not enough to get them to the Presidency.

There is no doubt about it Bro, he has the PR men in town and political operatives; his campaign is now slowly transforming into numbers, at least on the the surveys.
Noynoy has been laid back the past months, maybe overconfident of his big lead? Still a good numbers of months left before election day, lots of work to be done.

I don’t think this is about how good his PR firm is. It’s about the extremely obscene amount of money he has spent for his campaign. Jhay, with all due respect, what do you mean by Sen. Noy’s camp “better wake up?” Are you suggesting that they go by Villar’s strategy of spending billions to win the presidency? Kung nag-mature na talaga ang Filipino voter, then we should be able to see right thru these exploitative ads. Again i ask, how does Villar intend to recoup all his spending?

The logic is simple Mark, if you the have funds, you can buy the best PR team money can buy. Would you spend say Php1000.00 on something worth just Php10.00?
There’s no need to ask how much Villar is spending on his ads, because everyone knows it now runs in the hundreds of millions if not in the billions.
My point is, that the Noynoy Aquino camp go by Villar’s strategy of maximizing his campaign funds in promoting his platform, his solutions to the problems of our country, his vision for the country, not spend it on promoting the already famous and well-known TV personalities, whom with all due respect, has done little to really help improve our country.
He should stop riding on the fame and name of his parents alone, be a man and grow up. He should stop touting motherhood statements and just plain rhetoric. I may no trust Villar and will not vote for him, but at least he’s talking about real issues and coming up with proposed solutions to it.
Kasi ikaw na rin ang nagsabi Mark, “Kung nag-mature na talaga ang Filipino voter, then we should be able to see right thru these” motherhood statements, rhetoric and appeal to Ninoy’s ghost and the Cory Magic and ask Noynoy, where is your platform? What is your vision for the country? Say for example, what is your stand on agrarian reform and the Hacienda Luisita issue?
We both agree that Villar will recoup what he has spent during this campaign if and when he becomes President. And we all know how he will do this, let us not kid ourselves. But that’s a big IF, and the solution is very simple, don’t vote for Villar.
Again I say, the Noynoy Aquino camp better wake up to the reality that the Cory Magic alone is not enough to get them to the Presidency.

Hi Mark! If I may join in the discussion, I must say that that Noynoy should indeed wake up at some sense. No, not spending billions the way Villar is doing, but it is more or less of reassessing his campaign strategies.
There is no big problem with invoking his parents’ memory as it posses two effects: first, since his parents did great in terms of public service, he is bound to do the same as the most honorable thing a son could give his parents; second is, it will give the effect that he is totally dependent on the accomplishments and memory of his parents.
As has been the clamor of people and viewers everywhere of debates and pundits on their printed and online columns, Noynoy needs to reassess his campaign strategy as Villar is already catching up on him with all the advertisements which by the way, from an innocent voter’s point of view is very enticing and “believable”.
I guess, if this is what we are so far is seeing from Villar with the official campaign period has not yet started, how much more will we see during the campaign season?

Jhay, i think the statement that “he should stop riding on the fame and name of his parents alone” is a rather shallow analysis and assumption. First of all, it is not Sen. Noy’s fault that he was borne of patriotic and well-loved parents. Hindi mo naman mahihiwalay ang anak sa magulang di ba? Kung mabubuti ang iyong mga magulang, bakit di mo nga ba tularan? Even Gordon and Gibo have mentioned the values that they learned their late fathers while campaigning. It is just too bad that theirs are not as admired by the Filipino people. To say that Sen. Noy is counting only on that is simply naive.
Second, almost all candidates will spew out motherhood statements. How you came to the conclusion that Villar talks about real issues perplexes me. Wasn’t he the one who said regarding platforms that “lahat kami pare-pareho lang naman ang sasabihin, may 10pt., 16pt agenda tapos ipa-draft sa staff etc. etc. something to that effect.” How is that talking about real issues? If you are willing to do your own little research, a lot has been said about the Sen. Noy’s plans if he gets elected president.
Trust me when i say that i am past the Cory magic and will not vote on the basis of that alone. I am sure the same holds true for majority of Sen. Noy’s supporters.

If I recall it right, Noynoy’s latest TV in which he swore that “Hindi ako magnanakaw” was preceded by the lines “Sa ngalan ng aking mga magulang.” Blurred, though easily identifiable, in the background is a bunch of family pictures on top are photos of Ninoy and Cory Aquino.
Tama ka nga na hindi nalalayo sa mga magulang ang anak. But how long will Noynoy keep invoking the memory of his parents?
Second, it’s true that Villar said that about most platforms being motherhood statements and I simply hated him more because of it. But issues like poverty, our ailing industries, the problems of education and more are real issues that should be the talking point of our elections and their campaign, not just some simple pledge on not stealing from the public coffers. And don’t even get me started on agrarian reform and Noynoy. Research that will you?
I’m glad that you’re well past the Cory magic, kindly head on to the LP headquarters and tell Noynoy’s team to wake up and get serious with their campaign. Tell them that the coming elections is not simply about evil GMA vs “good” Noynoy Aquino.
Again, Villar’s improved SWS surveys and Noynoy’s static if not diminished lead is another red flag that it’s time to wake up and get serious with the campaign.

In one of the events I attended in which Villar attended, he explained that he needs to level the playing field that’s why he has many ads. I think he is referring to Noynoy Aquino and the ABS-CBN. Maybe, you have noticed also that the ABS-CBN has been giving free media mileage to Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas. While they highlight other candidate’s negatives, they cover every single gimmick of Noy and Mar. Are they the station’s bet? I think it’s obvious. Villar also said that he thinks the people should at least know what he has done, what he can do and what his visions are for the country. So in absence of an illustrious last name and a superstar sister like Kris Aquino and a big media company back-up, he needs to BUY airtime.
For me, there’s nothing wrong in what he does. If that’s what it takes so people will know him better, then it’s fine. At least he is not indebted to any media company. In the end, it’s us who will decide whom we will vote based on the information that we have.
They say, instead of spending it in ads, why not just give it to the poor? I think, even if Sen. Villar give millions to the poor, it won’t provide lasting change to most number of poor Filipinos. It needs to be institutionalized in the government.

Thanks for the comment Jonas. I think ABS-CBN is not biased towards Noynoy as I see it. When it comes to business, ABS is one hell of a rigid company…and when it comes to advertising, we can see more Villar ads being played than that of Noynoy; only that maybe, because Kris is a big personality at ABS that we get this impression that they promote him.
Moreover, Willie Revillame is also boldly and outspokenly promotes Villar on his very popular noontime show, with Villar even guesting there for many times already.
I think on that aspect everything seems just fair.

Jhay, why should he stop invoking the memory of his parents? People identify with them as icons of democracy. It is no different with Villar bombarding us with ads and aligning himself with the poor masses (being one himself once upon a time). Ok, so what do you know of the Luisita issue that i may address them?
Also, please define what you mean by “waking up?” Have you not seen or heard any of the forums that he has attended? Marinig mo naman siguro kung ano ang mga stands niya sa iba’t-ibang issues? You can visit his site too if you want to know more about his plan of government. What else do you want?
Lastly, here’s an artieel that amy give a different perspective as to Villar slicing Aquino’s lead in the latest SWS surveys.
And Jonas, how can you say ABSCBN gives Sens. Noy and Mar free airtime? As far as i know, ABS has been covering all presidential candidates. Just last night, Erap was covered being in Malacanang. Granted for the sake of argument that ABS indeed is biased towards the LP. does that give Villar the license to spend that much money (in the hundreds of millions) for his campaign? Hindi ba’t merong batas na naglilimita sa gastusin ng isang kandidato?

Mark, invoking the memory of his parents have served him well, but as you’ve said, things are way past that, including yourself and majority of Noynoy’s supporters, which I am now becoming a more reluctant member of. This is evidenced by Villar’s improved SWS ratings (something you’ve been completely ignoring). A signal that it’s time to wake up, reassess their campaign strategy and to get more serious with it.
If Villar has managed to improve his ratings by this much in a span of almost three weeks, what more once the campaign goes into full gear? Noynoy Aquino and the LP cannot be complacent and too overconfident about their lead.
What’s wrong with identifying with or reaching out to the masses? What’s wrong with reaching out to the impoverished majority of the Filipino people who so richly deserve the next President’s attention? If Noynoy refuses to reach to out them then it only confirms and reaffirms his elitist and personality-based politics, which is a politics we’re dead sick of.
Why should it be you who’ll address the Hacienda Luisita issues? You’re not a Presidential candidate. Why proxy for Noynoy? Why not just let Noynoy address them head on? Waving around yellow ribbons and pictures of his great parents would not certainly address it now would it?
I know about Noynoy’s website. I’ve visited it more than a dozen times. It would do more good if the masses could also visit that website. But then again they can not can they? And that is the point I’m driving at. Enough with a campaign based on emotions evoked by icons of democracy, it’s time to wake up from euphoria and do some serious work.
If Noynoy’s battlecry is “hindi ka nag-iisa” which I thought was meant to be telling the poor Filipino that he is not alone for Noynoy is with him, but instead it’s the opposite. It says and shows that “Noynoy, hindi ka nag-iisa.” Again, another sample of personality-based politics because the Presidency is not only about the President, it’s about the President serving the people and bringing this country forward.
Lastly, can you share the correct link about the article you wished to share? Thanks!

Whew, some really hot discussions in here. Let’s just say that Villar got a volume discount from his primetime ads, and let’s say for every 30-second primetime ad he pays 150K pesos, and noting how many times in an hour his ads are shown (say, 6 times per hour for 4 hours = 24 x 150K = 3.6M per night per network x 3 networks = more or less 10M/night plus radio and other timeslots, plus newspapers, plus facebook and google (about 150K to 250K pesos a day).
Villar is probably spending around 10M to 15M a day. Whew, these are guesstimates but, that’s still a big amount of money.
But wait until he ask Erap to backout from the Presidential race and that’s probably another big amount of money needed to make it happen. LOL.

Without even making a computation, it is certain that Manny Villar is spending one hell of an amount for this campaign.
When I posted this question over twitter, MLQ3 tweeted me and told me that estimates by some reporters and investigative journalists puts it around 3-4 Billion Php already. Man!!!
