First of all, I would like to thank Elmot for inviting me to guest post in his blog.

Kris Aquino first expressed her desire for her brother Noynoy Aquino to remain single during her heartfelt eulogy for her Mom. She said in part that her son Joshua said in jest (yet sincere manner) that the he does not wish his uncle Noynoy to get married. That statement caused stir but not too much as it was merely coming from a child. However, when Kris said for the second time that he wishes his brother to remain single, her statement caught the ire of a few.

Some commented that Kris Aquino was being her tactless self; some said that she has gone overboard in meddling with her brother’s personal affairs; I say, Kris merely wants to become First Lady.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines in part “First Lady” as the “hostess of the chief executive of a country or jurisdiction”. Though ideally, the wife of the president serves as the official First Lady, in some obscure instances, especially in the case where the chief executive is either a bachelor or a widower, a female member of his household may act as de facto First Lady.

In the Philippines, there exists a precedent wherein someone other than the wife of the president acted as the First Lady.

President Elpidio Quirino was a widower when he assumed to presidency on April 17, 1948. He appointed her daughter Vicky (Victoria Syquia Quirino-Delgado) as official hostess of the presidential household. Vicky was not only First Lady in title; she had been involved in a variety of socio-civic activities.

The post of the First Lady is not worthy of belittling. Imelda Marcos, perhaps one of the most prominent First Ladies in history, was alleged to have a massive control over domestic and foreign policies.

I remember an anecdote told by one of my professors. She said that when Imee Marcos applied for admission in our school, the U.P. College of Law, she was required to fill out an information sheet. The panel noticed that her father’s occupation reads “public servant” while her mom’s reads “government.” When asked whether it was a typographical error, Imee wittingly said “because my mom thinks she’s government.”

Noynoy Aquino was said to have been leading the presidential race. Supposedly unreleased survey results show that a half of the statistical sample considers him the best presidential bet. And should this trend continue ceteris paribus, Kris becoming the First Lady is not improbable.

Despite the fact that Noynoy is romantically linked to one Shalani Soledad, Noynoy cannot marry until August 1st of next year, following the Filipino (and Chinese) tradition of “Babang Luksa” (First Death Anniversary). Should Noynoy win, he will assume to office on June 30th, a month before his mother’s first death anniversary.

The post of the First Lady is very essential. She is tasked with a number of socio-civic duties. Also, it is customary for a chief executive during consular affairs to bring her First Lady to official events. Given these, it is most practical for Noynoy to appoint one. Kris Aquino is highly qualified to become a First lady if only on the basis of his consanguinity with Noynoy. However, choosing a country’s First Lady does not only rely on technicalities and legalities. An assessment of Kris’ personal qualification is needed. There is no question on the legality of her being the First Lady but given the attitude she had been showing lately, I hope the future First Lady will not become a “First maLady.”

What is your reaction to Kris Aquino having that possibility of becoming a First Lady if ever his brother Noynoy Aquino wins the election and chosen? Will she become a good First Lady?
